ChopShop is an application that chops up an image to create iOS app icons.

ChopShop is a template based image slicing system. Drag an image into ChopShop then export all iOS icons in one go:
- iTunesArtwork - Icon for iTunes AdHawk distribution (512×512)
- Icon@2x.png - Home screen icon for iPhone 4 (114×114)
- Icon-72.png - Home screen icon for iPad (72×72)
- Icon.png - Home screen icon for iPhone 3 (57×57)
- Icon-Small@2x.png - Settings/Spotlight icon for iPhone 4 (58×58)
- Icon-Small-50.png - Spotlight icon for iPad (50×50)
- Icon-Small.png - Settings/Spotlight icon for iPhone 3 (29×29)
Uh, I don’t really get it. I was expecting an app where I could drag my 512×512 image into ChopShop and *it* would generate all the required icons. THAT would be helpful. It appears that each icon has to be handcrafted in a graphic editor app as before ChopShop, and then add nine steps to paste the all of those icons from each of their files into another PNG file that THEN has to be loaded into ChopShop, and then it generates icons (which I’ve already created and easily saved to Xcode). Seems like a lot of extra work to me with no discernible benefit. Maybe I missed something???

It’s true you could just save one 114×114 icon and it would be used for all icons, except iTunes. This template is for icons that you want to hand craft for a each variation. The idea is you would create/copy an icon to each location then tweak it so it looked perfect at each resolution. Not all icons require this much attention. For example if you had an icon with a 1 px stroke in the 114×114 icon it might not look so great in the 29×29 icon. A new version of the icon could be created specifically for the small icon and others: example icon. This is only version 1.0 of ChopShop, I’ve already started to add new features to expand its usefulness beyond just iOS icons. One of the features is to use custom cut lists to cut up any icon sheet. I should have a screen cast about this soon.
